When we heard that our beloved Midtown Grill in Clifton had closed we were sad. But, upon hearing that Lucky’s Steak Plate was opening a second location on that spot we were somewhat appeased. We’d visited Lucky’s in Fair Lawn once before and liked what we had so we headed back to to try a few more items on the menu.
We tried quite a few dishes over our two visits but our favorite was the Breakfast Burger. Pat LaFrieda’s ground meat is expertly grilled and topped with Taylor Ham, American cheese and an over easy egg. You don’t have to get the egg over easy but that’s the way we like it. It’s a very tasty burger with lots of juicy meat and the toppings are plentiful but don’t overwhelm the sandwich. Ed liked this so much that he got it both times we visited.
We wanted to try their steaks but we went for lunch both times so we tried the Ribeye Steak Hero. It was an extremely flavorful piece of meat served on garlic bread. Deliciously simple. You can also add cheese if you want.
We tried two different cheesesteaks. The classic Cheesesteak Hero came with plenty of really nice shaved beef and a whole lot of cheese. We got peppers and onions on this sandwich and we could have used a little more. Everyone we met who worked here was really nice so we could have easily asked for more had it been a real problem. It was delicious without asking so we just dug right in.
We also tried the Sliced Steak Breakfast Hero. The sliced steak was topped with a ton of cheese (a little too much), three eggs cooked to order and hash browns. It was a giant sandwich that we ended up taking half home with us. It was really good but if you tried to eat this for breakfast, you might not be hungry until the next day!
Because we can’t resist a hot dog, we also tried a Lucky Dog with classic All the Way toppings. The dog was so crispy that it could have been deep-fried though the menu didn’t mention that they were. The chili was nice and spicy. Perfect!
Fries with gravy and onion rings were also good and came in pretty nicely sized portions.
All in all we’ll still miss Midtown Grill but Lucky’s Steak Plate should be a welcome addition to Clifton’s hot dog and burger offerings, especially in the Main Avenue area of town.
