On Saturday July 11th, Asbury Park held their inaugural Promenade of Mermaids on the boardwalk. There were many creative and fun costumes. People lined the boardwalk to watch mermaids, jellyfish, seahorses, sharks and pirates parade past them.

There was even a costume contests with prizes donated by local businesses.

The Promenade of Mermaids was originally born in Sacramento, CA and Asbury Park held the sister event for the first time this past weekend.

Most people are familiar with the Coney Island Mermaid Parade held in Brooklyn, NY, which is more of an artsy adult celebration, but the Promenade of Mermaids was a family friendly event (no nudity) and many families participated.

AP-Mermaid-11Asbury Park has seen a renewal in recent years. With the success of the Asbury Park Zombie Walk, Santa Con, the Saint Patrick’s Day parade and now the Promenade of Mermaids, we hope to see more events like these.
