On a beautiful Autumn afternoon, Saturday October 17th, Asbury Park hosted two simultaneous events downtown. Asbury Bites was sponsored by Asbury Park Shuffle and highlighted many local independent shops and eateries. Several stores on Cookman Avenue and a few on nearby side streets partnered with local restaurants and specialty food merchants to give free samples from their menus. This was a win-win as folks got to try some great local food while shopping at some great and unique shops.
Asbury Bites also coincided with Asbury Underground which is a day-long art and music event all over Asbury Park’s downtown. We caught two acts as we walked through Asbury. Julian Fulton played an acoustic set outside near the Cookman and Main intersection.
And, Renee Maskin played inside America’s Cup Coffee Company.
Our first stop was at one of our favorite stores in Asbury Park. Shelter Home has hundreds of awesome, modern items for the home.
Many feature Asbury Park themes like pillows and towels. Any time we are strolling through town we always try to stop in. They partnered with the vegetarian and vegan Twisted Tree Cafe. Delicious muffins and cookies.
Next stop was clothing store etc… where Lentil Tree, who is opening up on Fifth Street in November, was serving delicious parsley patty pitas. (Can’t wait for this new restaurant to open!) For the booklovers, bookstore words! had tasty donuts from Purple Glaze. We visited Purple Glaze for the first time this summer and were blown away by their creative donuts.
The creative women’s clothing store Nita Ideas partnered with one of our favorite places to nosh in Asbury Park, The Chat & Nibble. We wondered what were in the little boxes and were thrilled to see brownies! They were superb. Moist and delicious. After the sweets we were craving something savory and the wonderful vintage clothing and novelty store Backward Glances had just the thing. Rice and beans with ham croquettes from the Cuban Cafe were among the top offerings of the day.
Uncorked is a unique BYOB establishment where you can drink with a party while relaxing and create paintings. They had some flavorful empanadas from Crust & Crumble. They offered 2 varieties—Chorizo with goat cheese or jerk chicken. We sampled both and they were equally delectable.
Foolish Ginger has been a favorite spot for us to buy gifts for a while now. The eclectic offerings are always fun to browse and we always have to fight the urge to splurge on ourselves. They were serving a sample of what makes The Speakeatery a really special gourmet deli and market. Scrumptious pulled pork, mac and cheese sliders. Hot Sand is a great place where you can learn the art of glassblowing and buy creative glass gifts. They partnered with Vintage Subs to offer that classic New Jersey sandwich, the Italian sub.
Other partnerships included Exhibit No.9 and Pepe Events Catering, Kur and Dino’s On Main, Tao and Confections of a Rock$tar, and The ShowRoom and Kula Cafe.
We had an incredible afternoon of local shopping and local food.
