Pizza Town USA, Elmwood Park – Review

We’re celebrating National Pizza Month by trying the best pies all over New Jersey.  This week we tried Pizza Town USA’s pizza.

We really liked the chopped pepperoni and sausage that came on this pizza.  Instead of thin slices that disappear under the cheese or sausage grounds that have a strange crumbly texture, these chunks of meat really made sure you could tell they were there.  There wasn’t much cheese on the pie which was good for us but probably not what most people prefer.  The crust was really chewy and had a great yeasty flavor.  It was a little floppy on the ends which was surprising based on how well done the edges were.

Overall, it was a good pie.  There is a booking takeout business and not many people ate at the picnic tables in the restaurant like us.  In fact, we had a few oglers because people were standing around waiting for their orders and, naturally, they were hungry and asked us about our pizza.

The men and women behind the counter are kind of interesting to watch as they work. They scream at each other and seem unhappy.  But, if you really listen to what they’re saying and not how they sound, you can tell that what’s really going on is that they are serious about their jobs and good food.

If you decide to try the pizza here, you should also try their zeppoles. In my opinion, they are better here than any boardwalk zeppole place.  Pizza Town’s zeppoles are intensely crunchy on the outside and wonderfully doughy inside.  And, they come with a ton of powdered sugar served in the classic white paper bag.

We’ve had their calzones here before (but not on this trip so we don’t have a picture), too. They’re really excellent.
