It’s National Pizza Month so we’ve been looking for pizza places all over New Jersey to check out. We first learned about Ruthie’s Bar-B-Q and Pizza through their mouth-watering Instagram feed a few months ago so we brought musician Michael Aquino and his wife, author and playwright Dania Ramos, to Ruthie’s to ring in this auspicious month-long celebration of pizza.
We tried two of their pies. The first was a Ruthie’s classic with fresh tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella and Asiago cheeses.
What a great pizza! The crust was chewy and had the perfect thickness to balance out the cheese and veggies without being too thin and floppy. The tomatoes were so fresh they tasted like a garden. For a really classic pizza taste, you should try the Neapolitan but the Ruthie’s Classic had a nice twist with the tomato slices.
We also tried the Texas pizza which was really spicy!
It shouldn’t be a surprise that it was so filled with spice and flavor. It comes with smoked mozzarella, spicy sausage, jalapenos, marinara sauce, BBQ onions and pesto! Honestly, we knew we’d try this before we even decided on anything else. The great crust again supported all those toppings perfectly without being too floppy. Despite being well-seasoned, we could taste all the individual toppings. That’s not an easy feat!
We’ll definitely be coming back to try the BBQ at Ruthie’s and make a full review later.
Happy National Pizza Month, New Jersey! Where should we go next?
