One late submission of great New Jersey pizza that we tried for National Pizza Month in October. Richland Pizza and Sub Shop claims that they have the best pizza within 50 miles. We are inclined to agree. We’ve searched high and low for really great New Jersey style pizza in South Jersey and have found some serviceable pies but nothing truly great. We finally found it in Buena Vista, just north of Vineland.
We tried three different pizzas and each was good for different reasons. The first was kind of an appetizer pie because we ordered the Ultra Thin Personal Pizza with no extra toppings.
I mean, I’ve seen some thing crusts but this thing was the thinnest by far. It was basically a pizza cracker. The lack of any real crust made the sauce really stand out on this pie. It’s what they say makes their pizza so special and all I can say is that I’ve never had a sauce with this much body and complexity. It actually took me a slice or two to really wrap my head around what I was tasting. It’s incredible. And, the pizzas just got better as the night went on.
Next came the Meat Lovers Red Pie. It was covered with bacon, sausage, ham, meatballs and pepperoni. I’ve never enjoyed this much meat before on a pizza. Normally, I like to taste the sauce and just a few select toppings but for some reason I could taste all the different meat on this and nothing was overshadowed. This crust was nice and crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.
Finally, came the Spinach and Tomato White Pie. None of their secret sauce on this one, just mozzarella, ricotta, fresh tomatoes and spinach. We got to really enjoy the crust on this one by not having the rich sauce and bold meats. It’s just exactly the kind of crust I like. Thick enough to not flop over immediately when you pick it up but soft enough to not be completely crunchy. And, the outer rim of the crust was nice and chewy once you got to the end of the slice. We will definitely be coming back here whenever we’re in South Jersey.
I’m confused about the difference between the town names of Buena, Buena Vista and Richland. On Yelp (which is how we found Richland Pizza) the pizza shop is listed in Buena Vista. On their website, they say they are in Richland. And, on many phone app maps, it looks like they are in Buena. Wherever they are, their pizza is delicious. And, we hear their burgers and cheesesteaks are equally good. We’ve GOT to come back for burger month next spring.
Check out all the pictures from our visit to Richland Pizza and head on out to Buena Vista soon!
