Ray’s Luncheonette, Montclair – Review

We surreptitiously “discovered” Ray’s Luncheonette on a day that we wanted to visit another legendary Montclair lunch spot, Crockett’s Fish Fry, but they were closed. Sitting in our car and trying to think of another place to go that was nearby we stumbled onto Ray’s through Yelp.  I’d heard about Ray’s but their short weekday hours meant that we were rarely available to eat during business hours.  Finally, we were able to make it.  And, it was incredible.

That first day, we had lunch staples like a burger, hot dog and grilled cheese.  All were perfect examples of the classic sandwiches.    The burger we tried was called the Freddy Fred.  It came with carmelized onions, sharp white cheddar cheese and we even added bacon to make it extra special.  The burger was cooked to perfection and all the toppings were delicious.  This is one of those burgers that we could have eaten a second one of right away.

We can’t ignore a hot dog on the menu, of course.  The chili dogs were grilled and the chili was very hearty.

The grilled cheese with Taylor Ham was crispy and came with lots of cheese and meat.  I like when the Taylor Ham is crispy from the grill before it’s stuffed into the sandwich.

We also had some terrific onion rings. They looked and tasted like they were homemade and hand-dipped in batter; nice big onion slices with lots of coating.

After the amazing lunch we had, we couldn’t wait to have breakfast there. We were not disappointed. The Taylor Ham, egg and cheese was on the small side but delicious.  It’s rare to get a poppy seed roll so this was a nice surprise.

The Mexicali omelette came with chorizo, pepper jack cheese and pico de gallo on the side.  It was amazing.  And, the home fries were nice and browned just like I like them.

The pancakes were the big diner style ones that were custardy and soft inside.  Another home run for Ray’s.

Check out all the pictures from our visits to Ray’s Luncheonette and try to make it out to Montclair to visit them soon.  We can pretty much guarantee that anything you order will be delicious.  Tell them we sent you!
