Acoustic Show in Montclair Highlights New Jersey Female Musicians

Our musician friend, Liv Lombardi, put together an all-women show at the Porchistas Home Studio in Montclair last week and it highlighted the talents of several gifted New Jersey artists. Hopefully we can have some more of these shows because women musicians are not showcased often enough, especially in a state with such an abundance of wonderful female talent.

Gi Gi from the great Montclair restaurant MishMish opened up the show with a few singalong cover songs.

Emily Grove from Belmar took the stage next. We haven’t featured her enough on YDKJ and that’s a terrible oversight on our part.  This is the third time we’ve heard her play and her lyrics and voice are absolutely riveting. The audience held on to every word in the intimate setting.  She said that she came dressed as a space pirate which fit the vibe of the venue perfectly.

Host Liv Lombardi followed and as always played an emotional set.  We got to hear some of the music she’s been working on since taking a trip to an artists’ retreat in Oregon last fall.  Her new music is heart-breakingly beautiful and she tells us that she has a lot more that she’ll be working on later this year.  We can’t wait to hear it.

Finally, Montclair’s own Bern & the Brights closed out the show with their infectious pop music. The duo of Bernadette Malavarca and Catherine McGowan have an interplay of voices along with both acoustic and electric guitar that always captivates. The set even evolved into a dance party at the end of the night.

It’s rare to have a whole night of New Jersey music that’s devoted to women.  This night in Montclair just solidified in my mind the need to have more of these women-centric evenings.  The wheels in my brain are spinning so watch out for more of these evenings at the Porchistas Home Studio.
