This ain’t no Burl Ives. Move over Bing Crosby. You can just throw that traditional mix of Christmas songs right onto the yule log and watch that sucker burn. Yawn Mower are here straight off the naughty list to lend a little kinetic energy to the usual holiday standards. These guys bring the holiday sprit in full force, powered of course, by coal. See for yourself with tomorrow’s re-release of Yawn Mower Ruins Christmas out on Mint 400 Records.
Yawn Mower, Mike Chick on guitar/vocals and Biff Swenson on drums/vocals, is a two piece fuzz, garage, surf duo hailing from Asbury Park. Since their inception in 2015, the duo has released two EP’s, “Get To The Boat” and “What’s All This New Piss?” along with a smattering of one-off singles and covers.
In addition to retooled takes on classics “Joy To The World” and “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” they also take on Jimmy Buffett’s classic Margaritaville with their own “Christmastime in Margaritaville”. The album will excite you like kids trying to get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
Which brings us to “Silent Night.” Or not so silent night. Through fuzzed out, heavy, methodically diabolical guitar the Xmas staple gets basically turned on its head. Not sure if this is what original songwriter Joseph Mohr and composer Franz Gruber envisioned the song would evolve into but I bet they would be into it.
Yawn Mower will be celebrating the release of Yawn Mower Ruins Christmas at the Asbury Park Yacht Club in Asbury Park on 12/2/17 with Dentist and Wetbrain. They continue to dis the holidays at The Downtown in Red Bank on 12/7/17 with Plus Plus Minus and The Amboys and at the Wonder Bar’s Happy Monday in Asbury Park on 12/18 with our buds A Bird and The Vice Rags.
Yawn Mower Ruins Christmas will be available everywhere MP3s are sold and streaming on Spotify.
