One of the most enjoyable thrills right now is finally being able to witness several of our favorite touring acts bring their new material to life and rejoice in the live experience. For Boston rock/funk and soul outfit Lake Street Dive, it was an absolutely joyous and exhilarating experience as they brought their latest record Obviously to the majestic and intimate McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton. Playing to a full house, the band were in captivating command of the stage from start to finish and their musicality, chemistry and stage presence were truly mesmerizing to behold.

Lead vocalist Rachel Price was in fine form throughout and delivered a strong mix of blues, soul and balladry. Credit also goes to the innate chemistry between each member and even more impressive with it being a new line-up as well. Each member’s dynamic range and artistry was showcased effectively and the sheer joy and passion for the material shined through during each and every song. Some highlights included pianist Akie Bermiss delivering a sultry original “Alone Again”, and a show-stopping cover of the classic Beatles song “Don’t Let Me Down” which resonated greatly with the audience.
What was so truly satisfying about Lake Street Dive’s live show is how well-rounded it felt. The band’s newest material, including recent hits “Hypotheticals”, “Same Old News” and “Being a Woman”, all were brought to life on stage with flair and soul and seamlessly played off established fan favorites such as “Good Kisser” and “You Go Down Smooth”. The setlist for the evening also demonstrated the rich variety of Lake Street Dive’s musical scope and their audience interaction was upbeat and electric. The group effectively packed enough upbeat rock and soul numbers and ballads to balance it out and the group’s harmonies and instrumentation were impeccable.

As the band delved into the encore they sent the crowd out on a dazzling high note while reminding us why they’re one of the most eclectic, exciting and refreshing musical acts right now.
Ultimately with the return of live music, there’s plenty of new music and live experiences to take in. However, for those looking for music that’s full of soul and artistry, with plenty of style and energy to spare, then look no further than Lake Street Dive’s glorious live show.
