With Memorial Day around the corner, the Stony Pony Summer Stage kicked off its 2023 season with a night of amazing punk rock. The raucous crowd filled the legendary venue to see co-headliners Frank Turner and The Interrupters bring their spring tour to the Jersey Shore.

The night started off with Canadian indie rock band Bedouin Soundclash. Their sound is a combination of reggae, ska and alternative rock, and they played a solid set. By the time they finished their final song, the crowd was warmed up for the rest of the night.

Chuck Ragan was up next, filling in for Laura Jane Grace who had to drop off the tour. The lead singer of Hot Water Music played a great acoustic set, and joined the other three bands on stage throughout the night as they paid tribute to his musical influence. Ragan covered “Stand By Me” with Bedouin Soundclash and accompanied them on “When the Night Feels My Song.” He joined Frank Turner for “I Still Believe” and covered Bad Religion’s “Sorrow” with The Interrupters.

As dusk began to fall, Frank Turner and the Sleepless Souls hit the stage. Turner’s return to Asbury Park had been four years in the making, and fans of the English punk rocker had lined up well before the gates opened. The high energy set had the crowd dancing as the first crowd surfers of the night headed towards the stage. Turner even closed with a tribute to one of New Jersey’s biggest acts with “Living on a Prayer”.

The Interrupters have come a long way from playing the Brighton Bar back in 2016. You can sense they are on the cusp of superstardom. On this night they got to close out the show, and you can argue they even stole it. Aimee Allen and the Bivona brothers’ energy was infectious from the jump, and Allen never hesitated to interact with their fans (especially the kids) throughout the performance. It will be a tough for the rest of this year’s Summer Stage lineup to top this night.
