When it comes to New Jersey musicians, few are quite as universally beloved like singer-songwriter Brian Fallon, the frontman of both Gaslight Anthem and his solo project. After reuniting with Gaslight and touring together the last few years, Fallon has decided to embark on another solo project, this time leaning more into his rock roots with his new band Brian Fallon and The Painkillers. He debuted the band at a sold-out Stone Pony show in Asbury Park this past Sunday and judging by the results this new project will be an exhilarating showcase for Fallon’s natural songwriting talents.

The newer material sounded especially resonant live and Fallon’s chemistry with his backing band was truly heartfelt and exciting to witness. His setlist navigated not just his recent body of work but songs all across his discography. Fan favorites from his earlier solo works such as “A Wonderful Life”, “Among Other Foolish Things”, “Lonely For You Only” and “Smoke” fit seamlessly into the setlist alongside live debuts of “Not Bad For New Jersey”, and “Better Before”. While certainly a veteran performer at this stage in his career, Fallon’s performance here easily ranks among one of his most personal and affecting.

Having released and been a part of several acclaimed projects throughout the years, Fallon is no stranger to surrounding himself with talent and his backing band The Painkillers are no exception. Talented singer-songwriter Emily Wolfe, who also opened the night with an intimate and engaging set, was on drums by the end of the night for Fallon. The touring band lineup is going to host to a rotating list of top tier talent such as Chris Warren, Tim Barry and Dave Hause who will be joining Fallon this fall.
It also wouldn’t be a homecoming show without some special guests and Fallon was joined by none other than the Gaslight Anthem themselves for an exhilarating encore that had the place in rapturous applause. It was a joyous and celebratory moment in a show full of touching and heartfelt ones. The shared sense of community in the room was perhaps the most defining achievement for a show that helped usher in an exciting new era for one of New Jersey’s most established artists.

When launching a new project there’s bound to be expectations that arise, especially when one has a dedicated fanbase. Thankfully, in the case of Brian Fallon and The Painkillers this latest venture is a resounding success that also serves as an exhilarating showcase for some truly first rate musicianship. Established fans are in for a treat when the band fully embarks on tour this fall and newer ones will get a captivating introduction. Be sure to keep an eye out for Brian Fallon and The Painkillers if they come to a city near you. New album Not Bad For New Jersey is out September 10th.
